Vivek Ramaswamy: The Indian-American CEO who wants to be President of the United States

Two of the three Republicans who have announced plans to run for President of the United States are Indian-Americans. While Nikki Haley is a well-known name, surprise candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is not. Savita Patel, a journalist based in California, assesses his chances and whether he can effect change.

Mr Ramaswamy, a multimillionaire entrepreneur and the author of the book Woke, Inc., announced his presidential candidacy on 21 February with an appearance on a Fox News show and a video outlining his political beliefs. He wants to start a “cultural movement to create a new American dream” based on “pursuit of excellence,” and he believes that “diversity is meaningless if there’s nothing greater that binds” people together.

The 37-year-old Ohio native went to Harvard and Yale, made millions as a biotechnology entrepreneur, and then founded an asset management firm.
