This weekend, James Cameron made film history once again, as he has done so frequently throughout his legendary career.
According to Deadline, his long-awaited sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” has now grossed more than $2 billion worldwide.
That grand total includes the film’s box office take from this weekend, its sixth consecutive weekend at No. 1 since its December release.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 extraterrestrial epic “Avatar,” which remains at the top of Box Office Mojo’s list of the top-selling films of all time.
Another of Cameron’s films, 1997’s “Titanic,” is also in the $2 billion club. Only three other films have joined that club: “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” in 2015, “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018, and “Avengers: Endgame” a year later.
Cameron is thus the only director who can boast that three of his films have grossed more than $2 billion and are among the top six bestselling films of all time.
In the future, the director intends to release at least three more “Avatar” sequels.
