Seven people were killed in a synagogue in Jerusalem.

Seven people were killed and at least three others were injured in a shooting at an East Jerusalem synagogue.

The incident occurred around 20:15 local time in the city’s Neve Yaakov neighborhood (18:15 GMT).

Police described the attacker as a “terrorist” and said he had been”neutralised”.

The attack has been condemned by the United States. “We stand in solidarity with the Israeli people,” said Vedant Patel, a State Department spokesperson.

Several other countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, have expressed their concern.

According to local media, the attacker was killed by security forces as he fled the scene.

Tensions have been high since nine Palestinians, both militants and civilians, were killed on Thursday during an Israeli military raid in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank.

This was followed by rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel, to which Israel responded with air strikes.
