New sanctions target Iranian drone companies because of their ties to Russia.

The US Treasury imposed sanctions on Friday on officials connected to an Iranian defense manufacturer that designs and manufactures unmanned aerial vehicles used in the Ukraine conflict, as well as the director of “the key organization responsible for overseeing Iran’s ballistic missile programs.”

According to a Treasury press release, the new US sanctions target “six executives and board members of US-designated Qods Aviation Industries” as well as the director of Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization.

“We will continue to use every tool available to us to deny Putin the weapons he is using to wage his barbaric and unprovoked war on Ukraine,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

“The Kremlin’s reliance on last-resort suppliers like Iran demonstrates their desperation in the face of valiant Ukrainian resistance and our global coalition’s success in disrupting Russian military supply chains and denying them the inputs they need to replace weapons lost on the battlefield,” Yellen said. “The United States will take swift action against individuals and entities supporting Iran’s unmanned aerial vehicle and ballistic missile programs, and will remain steadfast in its support for the people of Ukraine.”
