Joshimath, Uttarakhand, India: Residents are concerned about large cracks in their homes.

After large cracks appeared in their homes, residents of Joshimath, Uttarakhand state, are demanding evacuation and rehabilitation.

Several construction projects were halted on Thursday after thousands of protesters blocked a national highway in the Himalayan state.

On Friday, the state’s chief minister will convene a high-level meeting to discuss the matter.

This week, dozens of people were evacuated to temporary shelters.

According to district officials, cracks have developed in more than 500 houses in the area as a result of gradual land subsidence, which refers to the ground gradually sinking.
