Emma Hayes asks WSL to support expectant mothers as Melanie Leupolz starts Chelsea.

According to Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, Women’s Super League teams should do more to support their players who become parents.

In Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Brighton, Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz made her first start since leaving on maternity leave.

Hayes told Sky Sports that if a player tears his ACL, every effort should be made to get them back on the field within nine to twelve months.

“We ought to treat pregnant women precisely the same, but we don’t.”

Hayes continued, “I think we need to take a closer look at why that is.

Hayes, who had a child in May 2018 while in charge of Chelsea, introduced a pelvic floor coach to facilitate Leupolz’s return.

“We take delight in setting the example,”
