Edinburgh’s victory over English Premiership leaders Saracens was insufficient to secure a home tie in the last 16 of the European Champions Cup.

In the first half, Dave Cherry scored before Saracens’ front-row forwards. Jamie George and Marco Riccioni were both shown yellow cards.

With three penalties, Alex Goode kept the visitors in the game.

Edinburgh took the lead thanks to Pierre Schoeman’s try, but Saracens earned a point and fourth place thanks to Ben Earl’s late try.

Saracens will host Ospreys in the next round of the Champions Cup, while Edinburgh, who finished fifth, will travel to Leicester.

This was a tumultuous contest from the start, with Edinburgh’s early score energizing the raucous home crowd. The energy and noise in the Dam Health Stadium, which sits in the shadow of Murrayfield, didn’t stop all evening.

It was a fantastic win for Edinburgh, not quite good enough for a home draw in the last 16, but beating the outstanding Saracens was a huge step forward.
