Christian Atsu was discovered dead following the earthquake in Turkey – agent

Christian Atsu, a footballer from Turkey, was discovered dead under the rubble of his home almost two weeks after the earthquake, according to his agent.

The Ghana international, 31, has previously played for Premier League clubs Everton, Chelsea, and Newcastle.

Atsu had been missing since the 6 February earthquake that destroyed his apartment in Hatay.

His club, Hatayspor, initially reported that he was rescued “with injuries,” but that position was changed a day later.

“It is with heavy hearts that I have to inform all well wishers that unfortunately Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,” his agent Nana Sechere tweeted on Saturday.

“My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and loved ones. I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone for their prayers and support.”

Atsu joined Hatayspor in September 2022 and scored the game-winning goal in a Super Lig match on 5 February.

More than 40,000 people have been killed as a result of earthquakes and aftershocks in southern Turkey and northern Syria.
