According to the sheriff of San Mateo County, the gunman’s motive is unknown.

San Mateo Sheriff Christina Corpus said during a news conference Monday night that deputies were alerted to a shooting in unincorporated San Mateo County at 2:22 p.m. PT (5:22 p.m. ET).

Deputies arrived to find four people dead from gunshot wounds. A fifth victim was transported to Stanford Medical Center in critical condition. Corpus said three more victims were discovered later at a separate shooting scene.

Corpus reports that the suspected gunman, a 67-year-old man from Half Moon Bay, was apprehended without incident at 4:40 p.m. PT (7:40 p.m. ET). Corpus stated that a handgun was discovered in his vehicle at the time.

Corpus stated that he acted alone and that his motivation was unknown.
